Dressed in his iconic scarlet coat, 88-year-old Chelsea Pensioner and army veteran Colin Thackery walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage carrying decades of history and a deeply personal story.
Having served his country for years, Colin revealed that his performance was dedicated entirely to the love of his life—his late wife, Joan. Married in 1954, the couple spent 66 blissful years together before Joan passed away in his arms in December 2016. Describing her gentle support throughout his military career, Colin shared a emotional thought before singing:
“I talk to her all the time… If she knew I was on this stage, she’d be really proud. Because she was truly the wind beneath my wings.”
A Performance Packed with Pure Emotion
Standing alone in the spotlight, Colin began his moving rendition of Bette Midler’s classic, “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
From his very first line, his rich, poignant vocal tone resonated throughout the entire auditorium. Armed with raw sincerity rather than theatrical flash, Colin sang directly to Joan’s memory. As he reached the soaring chorus, audience members and judges alike were visibly moved to tears.
