When 12-year-old James Miller calmly walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, he looked like a standard schoolboy. Flanked by his massive, cheering family support system in the wings—including his mom, dad, brother, nan, and granddad—the young singer from Sussex admitted to feeling a little bit nervous. But the second the backing track kicked in, his anxiety melted away, and he transformed the entire arena into a West End theater.
Taking on the Ultimate Vocal Challenge
James didn’t choose an easy pop song for his big moment; instead, he took a massive gamble by selecting “Defying Gravity” from the hit musical Wicked. Known as one of the most notoriously difficult, high-register theater tracks in existence, it’s a song that challenges even seasoned Broadway professionals.
The moment James hit the first soaring chorus, the judges’ jaws dropped. His incredible vocal control, effortless falsetto, and sheer stage presence completely mesmerized the audience. As he pushed through the demanding high notes, the energy in the room built to an absolute fever pitch. By the time he hit the iconic, show-stopping final note of the song, the entire arena erupted into a deafening standing ovation.
The Judges Couldn’t Believe Their Ears
The panel was left completely stunned by the sheer power coming out of the young performer. Alesha Dixon praised his bravery, noting that the ending of the song is a legendary “magic moment” and that James absolutely smashed it. Amanda Holden was left in disbelief, stating she couldn’t believe a kid his age had the vocal pipes to handle something so massive.
The praise didn’t stop there. KSI compared the performance to watching a high-caliber Disney star, while Stacey Solomon joked that seeing a talent like James makes ordinary parents question their own kids’ abilities, heavily praising his phenomenal falsetto control. Unsurprisingly, James swept the entire panel, walking away with a resounding four “yeses” and instantly cementing his status as a breakout star of the season.
