During a family gathering, I accidentally caught my mother-in-law slipping something into my glass of juice. A sense of dread hit me instantly, and without making a scene, I quietly switched glasses with my husband. What happened just minutes later made everyone feel physically ill
The family dinner seemed completely ordinary at first. The table was neatly set, hot dishes were being passed around, small talk filled the room, and the familiar sounds of the kitchen created a comforting background hum. My mother-in-law was moving back and forth nearby, pouring juice into glasses, chatting cheerfully, smiling as if nothing were out of place. I sat beside my husband, relaxed — until one brief moment changed everything.
She leaned toward me, pretending to straighten a napkin near my plate, and in one swift, subtle motion, she dropped something into my glass. It happened in a split second. No one else noticed — but I did. I saw it clearly. There was no doubt in my mind: she had added something to my drink.
My chest tightened instantly. A rush of fear and disbelief flooded me all at once. My thoughts spun wildly, but I knew better than to react openly. If I accused her at the table, she would deny it without hesitation — and I would end up looking paranoid or dramatic in front of everyone.
The dinner continued as if nothing had happened. Forks scraped against plates, glasses clinked, conversations carried on uninterrupted. No one suspected a thing.
I waited patiently for the right moment, when everyone’s attention shifted to the food. Then, as naturally as possible, I switched my glass with my husband’s. He didn’t notice at all. He took a sip calmly, completely unaware. I forced myself to act normal, even though inside I was shaking with tension.
Only a few minutes passed. Then something happened that made everyone feel sick — and my mother-in-law suddenly went pale
(The rest of the story is in the first comment )
Barely five minutes later, my husband’s face lost its color. He pressed a hand to his stomach, stood up abruptly, and looked like he was about to collapse. He felt nauseous, dizzy, and could hardly stay upright.
At the same time, my mother-in-law’s expression shifted. She stared at him in shock, as if she couldn’t understand what she was seeing.
When my husband rushed to the bathroom, I quietly walked over to her handbag, which was resting on a chair. Inside, I found an opened packet of powerful laxative powder — the kind that should never be added to drinks, let alone served at a family dinner.
No one needed an explanation. Everything became clear instantly. The dinner ended on the spot. Later, an ambulance had to be called for my husband, while my mother-in-law sat in the kitchen repeating that she “only wanted to scare me” and “never thought it would go that far.”
Her intention was simple and cruel: she wanted me to feel sick at the table, to be embarrassed and humiliated in front of the entire family.
After that night, I never accepted food or drinks from her again. And we never sat at the same table ever again.
