From Flirty to Phenomenal: Wesley Mountain’s Memorable Audition on ‘The X Factor USA’

Television singing competitions thrive on unpredictable moments, and Wesley Mountain’s 2013 audition on The X Factor USA remains one for the history books. Walking onto the stage with high energy and an unapologetic crush on one of the judges, Mountain delivered an audition that perfectly blended comedic tension with genuine musical talent.

An Intense Introduction

From the moment Wesley Mountain stepped onto the stage, it was clear he had eyes for only one person: judge and Destiny’s Child star, Kelly Rowland. Before he even sang a note, Mountain openly flirted with her, complimenting her outfit and making his admiration known.

The playful encounter took an intense turn when Mountain walked over to the judges’ panel and held Rowland’s hand. The bold move left Rowland visibly flustered, jokingly telling the audience, “He just held my hand, and my heart is just going crazy right now!”

The exchange was so high-energy that head judge Simon Cowell had to step in, telling Mountain to calm down and get his “impure thoughts” out of his head so he wouldn’t be too out of breath to sing.

The Performance: “Wanted”

Once the laughter settled, Mountain launched into a cover of Hunter Hayes’ country-pop hit, “Wanted.”

Despite his nervous panting moments prior, Mountain showcased a surprisingly smooth, rich, and capable vocal range. However, his intense focus never left Rowland. As he sang lyrics like “I wanna wrap you up, I wanna kiss your lips,” he step-by-step moved closer to her edge of the panel, singing directly to his celebrity crush.

The Judges’ Hilarious Feedback

While Mountain’s vocals were undeniably strong, his laser-focused gaze drew plenty of hilarious commentary from the rest of the panel:

  • Demi Lovato admitted she went through a complete shift in perspective, telling him, “At first, I thought you were so creepy… but you actually have a really good voice. You went from like creepy to cute.”

  • Simon Cowell offered a classic, bizarre analogy: “I once had a dog who liked steak… and it reminds me of the way you’re looking at Kelly. It’s like as you’re singing, you’re getting closer and closer like, ‘I’m going to eat you.'” He jokingly advised Mountain to take a long, cold shower before his next performance.

  • Kelly Rowland defended the performance, noting that the women in the audience loved it. “Ladies are attracted to passion. We like that a lot,” she noted.

A Clean Sweep of “Yeses”

Despite the comedic tension, Mountain’s vocal talent carried him through. Paulina Rubio, Demi Lovato, and Simon Cowell all gave him a “Yes” (with Demi adding the caveat, “don’t eat my friend”), and Kelly Rowland finalized the sweep with a definitive fourth “Yes.”

Wesley Mountain’s audition remains a classic X Factor moment—proving that sometimes a little extra passion (and a lot of confidence) can turn a risky audition into a ticket to the next round.
