Claudia Cardinale, an Italian actress, was a Hollywood star in her prime. She has appeared in more than 100 movies over her illustrious career; her busiest years were 1960–1970.
In a single decade, she starred in over thirty films, including popular series like “8½” (1963), “The Leopard” (1963), and “The Professionals” (1966), in which she costarred with Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin.
One of her best performances was in Sergio Leone’s 1968 cult classic, “Once Upon a Time in the West.” When asked about her experiences working with Leone in an interview, Cardinale stated that she had a unique working style.
“He would have the actors hear the score before a scene was filmed, and he would have the music composed before filming started,” she said. The Tunisian native said, “My main advantage was that I didn’t ask to go to Hollywood, they called me,” in reference to her acting career in the United States.
In order to keep control of all the new talent, Hollywood businesses rushed to sign any rising star during that time. Limited contracts are commonly granted to actors, which could potentially harm their careers.
But Cardinale managed to block her own path. She decided to take each contract one at a time rather than sign an exclusive deal with Universal. She was consequently free to follow her career and grow in the industry at her own pace.
Cardinale gained notoriety in movies like “The Professionals” and “The Pink Panther” during her three years in Hollywood. She has appeared in films with well-known actors like Rock Hudson in “Blindfold” and Rita Hayworth and John Wayne in “Circus World.”
She also had the opportunity to mingle with other Hollywood stars, like Steve McQueen, Barbara Streisand, and Warren Beatty.
In 1961, Cardinale had her Cannes debut in two films: “The Lovemakers,” directed by Mauro Bolognini, in which she costarred with Jean-Paul Belmondo, and “Girl With a Suitcase,” directed by Valerio Zurlini, in which she portrayed an independent singer.
She restored Federico Fellini’s “8½” and Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard” to the Croisette in 1963.The well-known actress admitted in an interview that she shot both movies simultaneously.
Cardinale revealed that Visconti wanted her to have black hair, but Fellini wanted her to look golden. Cardinale had very long hair at the time. Because of their differing opinions, she had to change the color of her hair every two weeks.
After that, Cardinale started a three-year career as a Hollywood producer, costarring in two of the movies, “Lost Command” and “Blindfold,” alongside Rock Hudson.
“Universal wanted me to sign an exclusive contract at the time,” she disclosed about this encounter. But I replied, “No, I’m European.” I will return. However, they persisted!
Unlike many other women, Cardinale has never participated in a naked scene. Apart from her work in movies, she is totally committed to women’s issues and has no desire to have cosmetic surgery.
